We’re over halfway through the year! Pretty soon, the 4th of July Fireworks will burst, and then, all of a sudden, everyone is back to school, getting dressed up for Halloween, and putting out Christmas decorations. Life comes at you fast these days, especially when our phones are buzzing nonstop from incoming texts or about that Amazon order that you can’t quite remember what it was for, but you know you needed it! Well, if you’re looking for a way to slow things down a bit, you’ve come to the right place. Today, let’s talk about cozy hobbies or “grandma hobbies” as they’re popularly called!
What Are “Grandma Hobbies”?
If you look up #grannyhobbies or #grandmahobbies, you’ll see thousands of posts about needlepoint, gardening, baking, birdwatching, and many more hands-on activities that are very low-tech and comforting. These were likely hobbies that you saw either your mom, dad, or your grandparents do back in the day, before computers! I remember my mamaw, Appalachian for “Grandma,” was a quilter, and she was exceptional! She made each of us grandkids a quilt, and I still use it to this day!
A Break From Constant Notifications
These hobbies bring us back to a simpler time when we weren’t constantly being notified or having our attention constantly pulled away by a text or a silly meme. Texts and memes are so fun, too. However, many of us are walking around overstimulated and stressed out about what we’re missing by not checking our phones. In fact, a recent study found the average Millennial spends about 5 and a half hours on their phone daily. is closely behind with an average of 4 hours and 48 minutes, and Baby Boomers are at 4 hours 19 minutes. That’s quite a bit of time in the day! Many people want to get back some of that time doing something that helps them relax, maybe after the kids have gone to bed or a full day of hard work. Low stimulation is a good break for your brain.
Finding Joy in Simple Things
One of my favorite cozy hobbies is baking. Usually, around Thanksgiving, I start baking season. Whether it’s pies or cookies or this lovely cranberry, brie wreath, it warms my heart to make something beautiful and see my family and friends enjoy it. I can lose track of time and have definitely missed some texts, but just immersing yourself in something simple, for the joy of it, can make you feel like you’ve added hours to your day.
Making Space to Wind Down
Have you thought about starting something new? Or do you feel like your schedule is already packed and you just want to go to sleep? Think of these hobbies as a way to wind down and help you feel more rested or even just take your mind off of your phone for a bit.
Hobbies Can Be Good for Your Health
Even studies show that starting a new hobby can add years to your life, whether it’s by helping reduce chronic stress or by joining a group hobby that lets you socialize and reduce loneliness.
Find Your Cozy
As Summer is coming to a close, now is a great time to start thinking about if you want to take up a cozy hobby to help cut back on screentime or channel some of that pent-up stress into something beautiful! And grandma hobbies aren’t limited only to the ladies, I’m sure there are many dudes out there who also have their own “grandpa hobbies.” Get out there and find your cozy!
