There Is More to Life Than Money

There is a longing in my heart that this life will never quench.

As C.S. Lewis said, “If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

While I love coaching, running, fishing, leading, reading, parenting—sometimes—investing, and helping clients, when I am still and reflective, my mind often wanders elsewhere.

But “not all those who wander are lost,” said J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis’ fellow Inkling. I like to add that not all who wonder are lost, either.

The Hope Behind My Words

This gravitation toward what is transcendent is a common thread running through most of my blogs.

Words and ideas are powerful. They inspire and can lead to redemption. One little nugget can be the match that ignites new habits and lights a new path forward.

That is the hope infused in my words.

Some fall on deaf ears, but not all of them. Just a bit of encouragement or gratitude from one reader keeps me writing more.

There Is Nothing New Under the Sun

I often feel like I am running out of things to say. Even Solomon proclaimed, “There is nothing new under the sun.”

I quote and re-quote C.S. Lewis and other favorite authors. I repackage wisdom received from friends, family members, teachers, and preachers.

I also slide in biblical principles whenever I can, a bit less innocuously than when I first started writing.

But there is a reason for that.

Some of you might say it is the reason.

More Than a Financial Advisor

As a Financial Advisor, the second half of the title resonates most with me.

If I am only a “Financial” Advisor, my legs feel cut off at the knees.

There is more to life than money.

Money is a tool. It blesses some and corrupts others. Most of us put far too much confidence in its mystical powers.

Couples with vacation homes still divorce. Children who are unprepared to be good stewards can inherit wealth, waste it, and become addicts. New kitchens cannot heal broken hearts. Man caves and fancy cars are no match for real friendship.

A sense of purpose brings more peace than retirement. Traveling the world is a dead end to nowhere if you are not content at home.

Building Wealth Is Only Part of the Journey

Accumulating and protecting wealth is important, but the journey goes farther.

Take a breather and refuel, but do not run out of gas or take your eyes off the road and crash into a ditch.

Save some energy for the fourth quarter. Do not work so hard building a lead only to crumble in the most important final moments.

Stand up as straight as you can. Solomon said, “Your gray hair is a crown of splendor.”

Now you need a plan for whom you will bless and how you will bless them.

Creating a Plan for Purpose and Legacy

A financial plan should help you prepare for the future, but it should also help you think about purpose, stewardship, generosity, and legacy.

What are you building toward? Who will benefit from what you have built? How can your resources strengthen your family, serve your community, or support the causes closest to your heart?
