The Long View: In Kale’s Own Words

This month, I, Kale Elmhorst, Kurt’s son, am taking over The Long View. My dad has asked me to write a short piece about myself to introduce myself. Follow along, and I’ll give you a brief snapshot of who I am.

About Me

I was born and raised in Lakeland and attended the McKeel school system until 10th grade when I transferred to Lakeland High School, where I played varsity basketball. In my senior year, we won the district title and unfortunately lost in the regionals, but I had an overall amazing experience being in the Lakeland Basketball Program. After all my academic and athletic hard work, I was blessed to be offered a spot on the Vassar College Men’s Basketball Team in Poughkeepsie, New York. These past two years being on the team have been so much fun, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. This most recent season, we finished 3rd in our league. At Vassar, when I’m not on the court, I am studying Economics and Computer Science.

I’m looking forward to the next two years that I have left. Being on the team has allowed me to surround myself not with teammates but with incredible lifelong friends and memories.

Where I’m at and where I want to go

Currently, I’m sitting in an office chair at the Allen & Company Lakeland Branch, writing this blog as a part-time intern. However, I want to be so much more than I am right now. My current goal is to study for and pass the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) Exam in preparation for taking the Series 7 License exam. I would also like to attend a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program in gearing up to succeed my dad and join my brother-in-law Zach Wesche in running the Elmhorst Group. Another career path that I could take would be to work in the Computer Science industry, where I am currently a part-time intern with eSpear.

(e)Sports

Sure, I play a collegiate sport and watch sports on occasion with friends, but I very rarely watch sports by myself. In fact, I’ve watched more eSports this year than physical sports. Technology, computers, and video games have always been a huge passion of mine ever since I was young and my parents first bought me a Wii. Though I don’t play in official eSports tournaments, some of my favorite games have large eSports communities featuring intense competitions between organizations. My favorite game, “Rainbow Six Siege,” is extremely competitive and requires precise teamwork and coordination both before and during competition. Playing the game for several years at a high level has allowed me to work on my leadership skills in low-time, high-pressure situations, which translate directly into basketball and the work environment. Though people may consider it play, and I do enjoy the game for fun, there is no denying how competitive gaming has changed me for the better.
