What is estate planning?

Estate planning is the process of determining how your financial estate, including your financial assets, will be distributed upon your death. A sound estate plan will help ensure that not only your final wishes are honored, but also seek to maximize the size of your estate by minimizing taxes.

Do I need an estate plan?

Some people believe that only older or wealthy folks need an estate plan. The reality?

Everyone needs an estate plan. While there are some factors that are important to note, virtually everyone has people who may depend on them, assets that will need to be distributed, and specific wishes they’d like to see fulfilled upon their eventual passing. Allen & Company financial advisors recognize how important of a step this is in any financial plan, even though it’s not something you may think about every day!

Estate planning checklist

  • Do you own a business?
  • Are you responsible for minor or dependent children?
  • Do you have elderly parents who are dependent on you?
  • Might the value of your estate exceed the amount that is exempt from federal estate taxes?
  • Do you have any specific wishes for how your estate is distributed?
  • Do you have a desire to avoid unnecessary taxes and probate?

If any of these apply to you, you need an estate plan!

Whether your estate plan needs a tune-up or it’s your first consultation, experienced Allen & Company financial advisors will guide you through.
