The Age of Gadgets

Coming off a blockbuster Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I had a simple question. What did Americans buy?? To little surprise, chatgpt informed me that most of the shopping carts out there -online or in person- held at least one tech item. Everyone loves their gadgets. People raising iPad kids; you can try to say hi to someone, but odds are their noise-canceling headphones have them lost in the sauce of a podcast or some music. The gadgets are everywhere. Heck, we are even using gadgets like watches and phones to buy other gadgets in the form of a tap, finger scanner, or face ID. For a deeper look, I found the fine folks over at the Consumer Technology Association had run some numbers on this phenomenon:

81% of U.S. adults plan to give technology as a gift.

Despite rising inflation and living costs, Americans continue to prioritize spending on technology. This holiday season, a record-breaking 81% of U.S. adults—equivalent to 209 million consumers—intend to purchase tech gifts.

Nearly half of Americans plan to gift health and wellness items.

Around 45% of U.S. adults plan to buy health and wellness products or services as holiday gifts. Popular choices include air purifiers, smart health monitoring devices, and fitness equipment, highlighting the growing demand for health-focused technology.

Streaming services remain a top gift choice.

Streaming content is a favorite among holiday shoppers, with over 160 million Americans planning to gift subscriptions for games, videos, music, audiobooks, and more. These options offer an engaging blend of entertainment and education, making digital gift cards a standout choice.

Technology aids shoppers during the holiday season.

According to a Black Friday survey, 98% of Thanksgiving week shoppers relied on technology to enhance their shopping experience. Technology empowers consumers to make informed decisions for holiday purchases, from price comparisons and product research to checking availability and reading reviews.

Technology makes deals easier to find and understand.

Tech tools are helping shoppers save money by providing easier access to deals. Around 50% of consumers expect to learn about sales online, while another 50% rely on TV ads to discover holiday discounts.

Merry Christmas to you and your gadgets!
