Summer Budgeting for Families: Fun Without the Financial Burden

As a dad of three little girls, I know firsthand how wild and wonderful summer can be. The girls are full of energy, schools are out, and the days are long. But let’s be real: summer fun can get expensive fast if you’re not careful. Thankfully, living in Central Florida, especially here in Lakeland, means we’ve got access to a treasure trove of budget-friendly adventures. You don’t have to hop on a plane or empty your savings to keep your kids entertained. Here’s how we’re tackling summer without blowing the budget.

Our home base in Lakeland is full of gems.

The obvious one: Bonnett Springs Park has become our second backyard. It’s free to enter, has great playgrounds, a splash pad, shady walking trails, and room for our stroller with the baby. Parker pretends she’s a nature explorer, Charlie is usually leading a dance party on the lawn, and Kristen and I are just trying to keep up.

For kids who want to see some real wildlife, Circle B Bar Reserve is great for early morning walks and has a very high probability of seeing some alligators. It’s a great early morning trail walk to avoid the afternoon Florida heat.

Speaking of the heat, one indoor air-conditioned option is the Lakeland Public Library. They have story times, crafts, and even the occasional reptile show. The programs are free, and they keep Parker and Charlie engaged without screens. Plus, it gives mom and dad a rare chance to sit and have a cup of coffee.

Kids bowl free at Cypress Lanes in Winter Haven, and kids skate free at Skate World in Lakeland. A few bucks for shoe or skate rentals and we’re set.

Another really fun evening out of the heat is at the Silver Moon Drive-in. Two movies for the price of one, snacks from home, and the kids in their pajamas. It’s hard to beat.

Some other things to do in Central Florida. If you want to venture out of Polk County, a few of our favorite spots are:

The Florida Aquarium

You get hours’ worth of fun and exploring all inside a beautifully air-conditioned dome. It’s great to spend the hottest hours of the day running around looking at all the animals. They even have a food court and a splash pad for the kids to cool off out back. This is the perfect 2–3-hour mid-day activity. They have a year-round membership for a family of 4 for $250.

Wekiwa Springs State Park

Crystal clear springs and picnic lunches (and a cool swim) make for a great day.

Rowdy Gaines Public Pool

In Winter Haven, the public pool has cool water and fun diving boards for the kids to attempt some fun jumps and keep cool.

Check out lakelandmom.com and city recreation sites; they are lifesavers. From $1 summer movie mornings to free concerts, story times, and splash pad events. There’s something happening every week if you know where to look.

Here’s to a summer full of fun, laughter, and not checking your bank account with panic. From our crew to yours, happy summer adventuring!
